Backpacking in Caernarfon Caernarfon is a major centre of North Wales and is a great base for exploring the rest of Wales on a backpacking trip. At the heart of Caernarfon is Caernarfon Castle, dating back to 1283, and its surrounding Medieval streets and city walls. We take a look at some sights to include in your backpacking itinerary and some handy hints and tips for your backpacking adventures. There are several hostels and B&Bs in and around Caernarfon. One of the most popular hostels is Totters on the High Street, which is just by the old town walls, a perfect base to begin your exploration of Caernarfon. Stop by the Caernarfon tourist information centre on Castle Street and you’ll find lots of information about where to stay and what to see during your visit. From listings of bed and breakfast, hotel and hostel accommodation, as well as campsites to all the information you need about getting around the city, transport links, tourist attractions, suggested walking routes and guided tours. A great place to pick up some locally sourced supplies for your trip is the busy Saturday market that’s held weekly on Y Maes. Just to the front of the grand old Caernarfon Castle, you’ll find an extensive range of market produce, much of it produced and grown locally. If it’s your first time backpacking, we suggest investing a good quality rucksack from an outdoor supplies shop. When you visit the shop, ask to have your rucksack fitted properly. Remember, you’re going to be carrying all of your equipment and holiday items on your back, and a poorly fitting rucksack will have you suffering from back pain in no time. While it helps to be flexible on a backpacking holiday, it can also help to have a basic journey plan prepared, jotting down the main points of interest you’d like to check out. It’s also a good idea to pre-book at least some of your accommodation before you set off. Caernarfon can be a busy place, especially over the summer holidays, and turning up to find all the hostels already booked up isn’t much fun! Many major banks, such as Santander and their ilk, now allow customers to manage their current accounts and savings accounts online and via telephone. To make it easier for you to keep tabs on your bank accounts while you’re on the road, you might want to sign up to telephone or online banking so that you don’t have to waste time hunting down a local bank branch while you’re on your travels. |
